A British-Inspired Slim-Cut “Speckled” Donagel Tweed 3 Piece Suit

A Tweed 3 Piece Tweed Custom Made Suit

Commissioned for a California Sea Side Wedding

We were asked to create an English-inspired, Tweed, 3 piece suit for a wedding in a sea side setting in Central California.

Our client from Los Angeles wanted the custom suit to have a very British “sporty” country vibe but have a MOD cut. He wanted something more rustic as, even though, the wedding was sea side the surroundings featured a lot of foliage and wood. The reception was in a an old sea side barn.

From sketch to finish: Our interpretation of a British inspired MOD cut suit. Note the tiny speckles of color in the close up of the Donagel Tweed.

Fabric

The Fabric was the key to this design. We narrowed it down to a tweed and the client quickly fell in love with a “speckled” Donagel made by Hardy Minis in England. The great thing about the fabric were these tiny imperfections of raw wool that were in different colors speckled through-out. It gave it a very vintage and old world feel and the weight of the tweed fit the British theme perfectly.

The Dress shirt featured an Egyptian cotton/linen blend, which gave the custom dress shirt a texture to match the heavy hand of the Tweed Suit.

Details

As Far as the details go, the suit was pretty straight forward. It featured a notch lapel with a 2.75” width, a “canoe” style chest welt pocket, and Standard flap lower jacket pockets. It was made a s a three piece suit with a matching Tweed vest.

The Shirt was made with a button down collar and barrel cuffs.

Cut

The cut was definitely British inspired. It was our interpretation of the Classic MOD cut made famous by The Beatles and 60’s Mick Jagger. Its Slim, with a high button stance jacket, shorter cropped hem, squared but relatively un-padded shoulders. Tweed is one of the few fabrics that really translate well in a MOD style British suit. The pants were a bit shorter cut and with a lower rise based on the client preference. (a big departure from a traditional high rise pant mostly associated with classic British tailoring.) The legs are made with a classic drain pipe straight cut and big cuffs on the pant hem.
